Reflection: Pray for Those in Authority
"I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity."
With great power comes great responsibility, and we should pray for our leaders, religious and civil, to take that responsibility seriously. We pray that those in authority are good leaders, wield their power responsibly, and keep the well-being of their people in mind. They do have authority. They do have power. They can affect the lives of their people, so we pray they are good and wise leaders and use their power well.
When I think of leaders my thoughts automatically go to leaders of countries and states, churches or other elected leaders. Yet we are all leaders in our own way -- parents, grandparents, coaches, friends, co-workers etc. -- maybe not wielding power but by suggestion or the example of our actions that help others to lead that life of "devotion and dignity." May we lead others as we wish to be led.
