Reflection: Who Are We Dependent On?
Today's Gospel according to John is the familiar metaphor of the vine and the branches; how we as branches need to be pruned to bear fruit.
As I reflected on this the images that came to my mind, however, were of the invasive grape vines and poison ivy vines and invasive vinca vines in the wooded area behind our house and the kudzu vines covering trees in the southern U.S.
These vines may be life giving, but only to themselves. The destroy the plants they grow on, they crowd out other native flowers growing in the woods. These are destructive vines. These are vines that bring death to other life.
What a contrast this is with Jesus, the vine from whom we receive life. Just as cutting the grape vines from their source causes them to die, so too, do we die spiritually if we cut ourselves off from Jesus. Whether we recognize it or not we are dependent on God. It is up to us to choose to remain attached to the vine and bear fruit or to choke ourselves off from God and die.
