Reflection: Live the Kingdom of God
I recently finished reading
The Time is Now: A Call to Uncommon Courage
by Sr. Joan Chittister. In this book she calls us to be "so much a prophetic presence that our corner of the world becomes a better place because we have been there." (pg.27)
The psalm and readings today express these same thoughts but in different words. In Matthew's Gospel (5:20 - 26) Jesus tells his disciples (us) to take the Ten Commandments to a higher level. Not only shouldn't we kill but we should not be angry, we should reconcile with others. We are asked to live our lives such that we help bring about peace and justice to all: "Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. (Psalm 85:11-12.)
It is through our actions toward family, friends and strangers that promote the Gospel message that we can show others how to strive to make the Kingdom of God a reality on this earth.
The question is will we take on that responsibility to make the world a better place for ALL?
