Reflection: Rest A While
In last week's Gospel, Jesus sent his disciples on a journey to spread the Good News. Today those apostles report back to Jesus about their journey. After hearing this Jesus said to them
"Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while."
I am always struck by the times in the Gospels when either Jesus seeks a place to rest or he tells his disciples to rest.
It reminds me that I, that everyone, needs some time to just be in order to refresh, not only physically but mentally and spiritually. There are so many ways to do this -- a walk in the park or forest, sitting at the beach listening to the waves, rocking on the front porch swing, staying in bed on a Saturday morning, going on retreat.
Last night I pulled a chair near one of the flower gardens and just watched the many bumblebees flitting from flower to flower. This also gave me time to look at the beauty of the various flowers and notice some of their intricate design. Yes, this hour refreshed me physically and mentally but also spiritually as I marveled over the beauty of God's creation.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this except to say that if Jesus and his apostles need to rest then we should pay attention and make sure we do the same. Enjoy the rest of your Sabbath and be sure you take some time to rest.
